Outside, the city of tomorrow: what furniture for the city of tomorrow ?
From 17th May to 29th August at the VIA Gallery, the exhibition “Dehors, la ville de demain” (Outdoors, the city of tomorrow) examines urban furniture and the evolution of our relationship with public space. Thought up by L'Ameublement Français, VIA and members of Ameublement Français’ urban furniture group, this event is a response to the contemporary issues surrounding the new functions of the city.
Hybrid living spaces, today’s cities allow us to meet up, relax, have lunch, connect or work. In response to the urban revolution which is posing societal, political and usage-related questions, public spaces are transforming. Through this exhibition, urban furniture makers who are members of L’Ameublement Français, students from ENSCI (supervised by Professor Mat Sindall) and independent designers are bringing the city back to life.
Resolutely looking to innovation, Caterina and Marc Aurel, the curators and designers of the exhibition, examine urban furniture from the perspective of the new behaviours of city dwellers, around 4 themes :
• Discovering new functions
A selection of recent objects, produced by manufacturers of urban furniture who are members of L’Ameublement Français, several of which are exclusive. To be discovered: a practical, secure bike rental machine (Buton Industrie), stretching equipment to put the city at the service of residents’ wellbeing (Husson International), urban lighting (Tôlerie Forézienne), a nomadic, connected office (Rondino)…
• Lunch outside
What if we had lunch in the city? On the agenda: prototypes, models and designs, the results of the collaboration between ENSCI students and the manufacturers who guided them in their thought process. In total, some ten projects that reconcile the city with closeness.
• Learning, relaxing, meeting up
Spotlight on Aréa’s ‘Atlantique’ seat, furniture designed as a ‘system’, allowing for all type of changes for a wide range of uses (relaxing, learning, reading, meeting up, etc.).
• Domesticating public spaces
Seating that looks like sofas, plant pots that look like vases, playing on the blurring of the lines between indoors and outdoors for a more ‘domestic’ view of public spaces. With the support of manufacturers Univers & Cité, MobilConcepts and SERI.
