Through “le French Design”, VIA wants to give international readability and visibility to an ecosystem sustained by France, its schools, its makers, its artisanal and industrial know-how and its cultural heritage.
They are the definition of French Design: standard-bearers, a tribe of professionals and amateurs with their expositions, values, films, conferences and prospective reflection. Le French Design by VIA inspires us and opens us up to the world.
For nearly 40 years, le French Design has forged the future of France’s art de vivre for new generations of people, each one progressively more connected, nomadic and hungry for meaningful and emotional experiences – but also increasingly conscious of their budget and the impact they have on the planet.
VIA was created in 1979 by CODIFAB and the French Ministry for Industry. Its aim is to develop and promote creativity and innovation in the furniture, decoration and private and urban development sectors, both in France and abroad, as part of an accessible global marketplace that is growing at an annual rate of 7 %.
The French Design Incubator builds contacts between designers, interior designers and manufacturers in a Speed Dating session and guides their projects (almost 500 prototypes made) to market with a system of loans specifically designed for makers. Each year, these professional meetings generate more than 1,500 contacts.
VIA online is opening its photo and project databases to professionals, schools and training centres, as well as its databases of prospective studies, trends across the world, and annual directories containing more than a thousand makers and manufacturers (Eyes on Talents).
The exhibitions promote French know-how at the French Design Gallery by VIA, a unique 300 m² venue at the heart of the Bastille neighbourhood, a showcase of creativity which also hosts fashion shows, showrooms, photo expos, conferences… Internationally, the touring exhibition NO TASTE FOR BAD TASTE generates more than 100,000 visitors and contacts per destination.
The best pieces of work selected from design schools are regularly exhibited at the French Design Gallery by VIA, or presented at international exhibitions such as the Salone del Milano’s Satellite section - a space dedicated to fresh new talent from around the world.
Every year, le French Design organises competitions or calls for applications from design or interior design students to carry out a prospective analysis for furniture makers or the wood industry on themes such as the secondary role of the building. Recent projects include: "Lunch outside", "The 5th room" and "New Living Wood".
We also maintain strong relationships with design schools abroad in Europe, the United States and Asia.
